Meet Medical Assisting Student
Alexandra Sisler

Alexandra Sisler’s journey through higher education has been anything but conventional, filled with both rewarding experiences and challenging life decisions. Five years ago, she enrolled at West Virginia Junior College with high hopes and excitement about her future. Her initial experience at WVJC was positive. She enjoyed her classes and appreciated the opportunities the school provided. However, life threw an unexpected curveball when she became pregnant, and her focus naturally shifted to her family. As a result, she made the difficult decision to withdraw from school and prioritize her new role as a mother.

After some time, Alexandra decided to give school another try and enrolled at a different college. However, the experience wasn’t what she had hoped for this time. She struggled to find the same connection and engagement she had felt at WVJC, and ultimately, she decided to leave once again. Her experience there showed that the institution wasn’t the right fit for her. Rather than feeling discouraged, Alexandra took this as a sign that her path might look a little different, and she chose to focus on her family once more.

For several years, Alexandra embraced her role as a stay-at-home mom, caring for her two children, who are now 7 months and 5 years old. She loved being there for them full-time, but as her kids grew older and became more independent, Alexandra began to feel a renewed sense of ambition. The time felt right to return to school and pursue her dreams once again. With her children starting school themselves and her fiancé working night shifts, she realized that finding a balance between family life and education would be essential. This was when she turned back to WVJC.

One of the main reasons Alexandra decided to return to WVJC was the flexibility it offered through its online education program. Balancing two young children and a household where her fiancé worked nights made traditional, in-person classes impractical. WVJC’s online component provided the perfect solution. Alexandra could complete her coursework from the comfort of her home, fitting it around her busy schedule as a mother. The convenience and flexibility of online learning gave her the opportunity to continue her education without sacrificing her responsibilities at home.

Choosing a field of study was another pivotal decision for Alexandra. She had always felt drawn to the medical field, a passion that developed early in her life. Before she moved to Florida, Alexandra worked at Mon General Hospital as a Material Handler, a role which further deepened her interest in healthcare. That experience inspired her to consider a career in the medical field. While she lived in Florida for two years, she continued working in a hospital setting, gaining more exposure and hands-on experience. After moving back to West Virginia, she felt ready to pursue a more advanced role in healthcare, which led her to choose WVJC Online’s Clinical Medical Assistant program.

The decision to pursue medical assisting felt natural to Alexandra. Her previous hospital experience, combined with her lifelong passion for healthcare, made this program an ideal fit. She was particularly excited about the prospect of working in a hospital again, but this time in a higher-level position. For Alexandra, returning to school wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about realizing a long-held dream of advancing in the medical field and making a meaningful impact.

The online learning environment at WVJC has been a great fit for Alexandra. She appreciates the flexibility to study anywhere, which allows her to stay on top of her assignments while managing her household and caring for her children. She has found the support system at WVJC to be incredibly helpful, with faculty and fellow students always willing to lend a hand. One class, ICP 101, stood out to her because of the hands-on learning opportunities it provided. Through clinical labs, Alexandra was able to gain practical experience that reinforced her classroom learning, and this hands-on approach has been one of her favorite aspects of the program.

Looking ahead, Alexandra has big plans for her future. After she graduates, she hopes to secure a job in a hospital, with the goal of eventually working in the labor and delivery department. Her dream is to combine her passion for healthcare with her desire to help bring new life into the world. She envisions herself in a stable, well-paying position that allows her to provide for her family while doing work she loves. In five years, Alexandra hopes to be in a good place, both professionally and personally, with a rewarding career, financial stability, and perhaps even a beach house where her family can make lasting memories.

When asked whether she would recommend WVJC Online to others, Alexandra doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She appreciates the flexibility of the online program, which has allowed her to balance her education with the demands of being a mother. For Alexandra, WVJC has provided the perfect environment to pursue her goals while maintaining the responsibilities of her personal life. The supportive community and the ability to study at her own pace have made all the difference, and she’s excited to continue her journey toward a fulfilling career in the medical field.
