Nursing Student Highlight
Alyssa Downward started her career as a student at West Virginia Junior College in June of 2021. Alyssa chose the accelerated Nursing associate degree program, which allows her to learn the skills needed in the nursing field in just eighteen months. Alyssa says she made this choice because of the “fast-paced curriculum and small class size. She also appreciates the flexible schedule that allows her to be a mom and work part-time while attending WVJC-Bridgeport. Alyssa says she feels her classes and instructors give her the information needed to prepare her for her NCLEX-RN∘ exam.
When Alyssa is not in class, she enjoys spending time outside. As a mother of a two-year-old son, she enjoys the flexibility of spending time with him at the park and watching him play while still enrolled in school. She feels she is gaining friendships that will last a lifetime when in class. She feels the bar is set high for her and her friends, and this gives them the “competitive edge” that drives them to be strong students and, after graduation, strong nurses.
After graduating from WVJC, Alyssa plans to pursue a career in obstetrics. She loves watching new life come into the world and cannot wait to help assist in this miracle of life. She says she wants to help first-time mothers become acclimated to their new role in life as a mom. Alyssa appreciates WVJC’s career assistance and feels this will help her achieve her goal of being an OB nurse at United Hospital Center.
Alyssa has plans to one day continue her education to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing and eventually her master’s. She appreciates her instructors at WVJC and says her favorite teacher is Ms. Pepin. She can break down information in the classroom, allowing her to understand the concepts and apply them in exams and clinical settings.
