Amie Starliper is a WVJC Online student. She chose to enroll in the Medical Coding program for a new career path. Prior to being a student at WVJC, Amie had attended other post-secondary schools. Her experiences, at both institutions, were quite different. At her first post-secondary schools, she didn’t feel challenged enough and that was one of the main reasons she was not successful. Amie says, “My heart just wasn’t in it.” She decided that her real passion was in cosmetology. Amie, then, went on to school to become licensed for this.
She did have a knack for this, but after fifteen years in the cosmetology business, Amie decided it was time for a career change. She ultimately chose to attend WVJC Online because she could continue to work and pursue an education. She can also make her own schedule, which was one of the biggest advantages in her mind. Outside of the class schedule, Amie was also looking for easy access, and structure. West Virginia Junior College fulfilled all of her needs. Her overall experience has been a positive one and she feels challenged every day. It’s hard for her to pick a favorite teacher because she likes them all! She enjoys the close-knit relationships and the true care the instructors demonstrate, like sending her cards on her birthday.
Amie chose Medical Coding because she wanted a good career in the healthcare field. She wanted something she would enjoy and that would be challenging for her. In her estimation, she has found all of those things at WVJC. Amie’s goal is to graduate from the online Medical Coding program and take the skills, certification, and career training she’s earned at WVJC and apply to a coding job at a hospital. Long term, she hopes to relocate and establish herself in a new area, and have a career as a medical coder, remotely.
Amie was able to go back to school because WVJC Online makes it more convenient. It’s awesome to have online programs available to achieve an education and a degree later in life. Life is so busy, but they really help you! The support has been unreal and Amie says she has never felt this kind of support before. She is learning so much in her program and said it’s been great, all of their programs are great, so she would definitely refer a friend to West Virginia Junior College!
