Choosing a career in nursing isn’t just a decision—it’s a calling. For recent West Virginia Junior College (WVJC) graduate Camron Wayne, this calling was the culmination of life experiences, career shifts, and a deep-rooted passion for helping others. His journey, marked by transformation, resilience, and inspiration, offers a meaningful look into what it truly means to pursue nursing with purpose.
From Biochemistry to Bedside: A Change of Heart
Camron’s initial college experience began at a large university, where he studied biochemistry with aspirations of attending medical school. However, the large-scale environment and long road to becoming a physician made him pause and reconsider his true goals. Rather than continuing down a path that didn’t quite fit, Camron chose to pivot. “Being a doctor is not what I truly wanted,” he explained. “I wanted to become a nurse, always at the bedside.”
This realization wasn’t just about changing careers—it was about embracing a deeper calling. His decision was driven by the desire to be closer to patients, especially during their most vulnerable moments.
A Background Rooted in Care
Before enrolling at WVJC School of Nursing in Morgantown, Camron was already immersed in the healthcare world. As a Rehab Nursing Tech at Encompass Health, he supported patients with a variety of needs—from daily care to physical, occupational, and speech therapy. This experience further cemented his passion for nursing, showing him the profound impact of hands-on care. Outside of work, Camron enjoyed connecting with nature through activities like fishing, snowboarding, mudding, and wakeboarding—pastimes that provided balance and renewal.
Why WVJC Was the Right Fit
When the time came to choose a nursing school, WVJC School of Nursing stood out immediately. What caught Camron’s attention first was the program’s accelerated format. “Having the opportunity to get out of school quicker than most other programs was something that not many people would pass up on,” he shared.
But it wasn’t just the accelerated pace—it was the people. Camron recalls feeling at ease during his interview, thanks to the welcoming staff that made him feel supported from day one. The comfort and encouragement he found at WVJC laid the foundation for his success in the program.
Passion for Nursing, Fueled by Life Experience
Nursing wasn’t just a random choice for Camron—it was personal. Having seen the power of nurses firsthand, and often being the go-to caregiver in his own family, Camron felt naturally drawn to the profession. “I realized how much I truly desire to be at the patient’s side during the lowest point in their lives,” he said. This deep-seated empathy and sense of duty would come to define his time at WVJC and beyond.
Hands-On Learning and Unforgettable Mentorship
One of the highlights of Camron’s experience at WVJC was the range of clinical opportunities he had access to. Early on in the program, he was already performing complex tasks like inserting nasogastric (NG) tubes—experiences that were both challenging and empowering. These opportunities not only built his technical skills but also helped him step out of his comfort zone, fostering the confidence needed for a demanding career.
Camron also credits his success to influential faculty like Cathy Dewitt. “She has been the most influential and helpful educator I have ever had in my life,” he noted. Cathy’s real-life stories from bedside nursing, paired with her unwavering support, helped reignite Camron’s passion whenever he faced challenges. “She helped me keep my spark and love for nursing alive.”
Looking Ahead: A Future in Emergency Care
With graduation behind him, Camron is preparing to take the NCLEX-RN* exam and has already secured a full-time position in the Emergency Room at WVU Medicine’s Ruby Memorial Hospital. His current role as an Emergency Department Tech has given him a head start in learning the fast-paced dynamics of emergency care, a setting he thrives in.
Looking five years down the road, Camron envisions himself as a seasoned emergency or trauma nurse. He also plans to earn his Certified^ Emergency Nurse (CEN) credential and undergo triage nurse training. And as someone who values mentorship, he’s open to becoming a clinical instructor someday to help shape the next generation of nurses.
Recommending WVJC with Confidence
Would Camron recommend WVJC to others? Without hesitation. Despite the program’s intensity, he believes it mirrors the real-world pace of nursing and appreciates the direct admittance into nursing classes. “The staff genuinely wants you to succeed and will help you in any way you need them to,” he emphasized.
A Life Full of Experiences—And Adventures
Outside of nursing, Camron has a fun fact that surprises many: he’s traveled to nearly every U.S. state—only six remain on his list: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Hawaii, and Alaska. He hopes to check them off soon.
And when it comes to cherished memories from WVJC, it’s not just the learning or the milestones—it’s the people. “My favorite memory of WVJC is definitely the friends I have met along the way,” Camron said. “We have bonded over the stress, sadness, joys, and achievements we have all experienced together.”
Camron Wayne’s story is one of passion, purpose, and perseverance. From discovering his true path to building a future in emergency nursing, his journey with WVJC exemplifies what it means to follow your calling—and support others along the way.
