Celebrating West Virginia Day

Happy 162nd Birthday, West Virginia!

June 20th marks a special occasion for West Virginians; it is the anniversary of our beautiful state’s establishment! These mountains are home to tight-knit communities, natural beauty, and deep-rooted traditions. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the history and culture of our great state and look ahead to the future.

Celebrating West Virginia Day

WVJC brings you ways to celebrate West Virginia Day, organizations that support the conservation of the Mountain State, and our efforts to improve the healthcare landscape in rural areas.

The History of The Mountain State

West Virginia has many nicknames, including “The Mountain State” and “Almost Heaven,” which reflect the state’s natural beauty. It’s an adventure paradise, from mountaintops to river valleys, with no shortage of awe for those who live here or visit. The state has a rich history of resilience, strength, and community.

West Virginia was established as the 35th state in the United States in 1863. At that time, what is now West Virginia was still part of the state of Virginia. When Virginia seceded from the Union during the American Civil War, the people of West Virginia remained loyal to the Union. Subsequently, they branched off to form the great state of West Virginia.

West Virginia was officially admitted to the United States of America on June 20, 1863. Each year, the twentieth of June serves as a reminder of the pride that past West Virginians took in their roots and beliefs.
