What Is A Medical Assistant?
Medical assistants are essential healthcare team members who can perform direct patient care tasks and behind-the-scenes administrative duties. Successful medical assistants are dependable, have strong communication skills, demonstrate initiative, and are compassionate while providing patient care.
At WVJC, our medical assisting students don’t just learn theory; they get hands-on experience in various essential healthcare tasks. From taking patients’ vital signs to drawing blood, giving injections, and performing and reading EKGs, our students are prepared to excel in a medical setting. They also learn crucial skills like patient interaction, medical paperwork handling, and effective communication with healthcare professionals.
WVJC’s Clinical Medical Assistant Program
At WVJC, we’re not just a school-we’re a community that supports and guides our students towards their career goals. Our Clinical Medical Assistant program, a comprehensive 18-month associate degree program, is designed to prepare students for various healthcare careers. In those 18 months, students learn a wide range of skills, from taking patient vital signs to drawing blood, giving injections, performing and reading EKGs, and assisting with medical examinations.
In addition to the hands-on training they receive in the classroom, students will complete an externship. During the externship, students can observe and apply the skills they gained in the program in a real-world setting while developing strong connections with industry professionals.
Upon completing the Clinical Medical Assistant program, graduates will earn an associate degree and be prepared to sit for the following National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exams:
Certifications provide employers with third-party recognition that graduates have the knowledge to be successful in their medical careers. These certifications can also give graduates a competitive edge when looking for a job. Additionally, certifications are often recommended or required to work as a practicing medical assistant.
Why Choose WVJC?
In addition to the externship and certification preparation directly incorporated into the medical assisting training program, WVJC students also benefit from the program’s accelerated nature, increased flexibility of online courses and hands-on labs, and robust career services.
WVJC’s accelerated program allows students to enter the workforce more quickly by only taking courses directly related to their field of study. This direct approach to education can significantly reduce the time and money spent on education.
Another benefit of choosing a WVJC Clinical Medical Assistant program is that students can complete courses online or residentially at the WVJC Bridgeport or WVJC Charleston campuses. Online courses provide convenience and the flexibility to balance other responsibilities, while residential courses offer a more traditional college experience with direct interaction with instructors and peers. The option to take courses online or residentially allows students to choose the learning format that works best for them.
Additionally, WVJC’s career services department provides support that empowers students to be successful during their academic journey and beyond. These services include career support, resume writing, interview preparation, and more. WVJC also offers job placement assistance and works with students to arrange the externship experience with potential employers. Additionally, WVJC provides career fairs and networking events to help students network and find job opportunities.
This combination of accelerated courses, strong career support, and flexible learning options make WVJC a good choice for students looking to start their careers quickly.
