WVJC’s nine-month dental assistant students are valued and versatile healthcare team members. While enrolled in this program, students acquire skills in dental procedures, oral hygiene, office management tasks, and dental technology.

WVJC’s nine-month dental assisting students prepare and are qualified to sit for the following National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) certification exam:

  • Nationally Registered Credentialed Dental Assistant (NRCDA)*

*Certification is contingent upon passing this industry certification exam.

Dental Assistant Skill Sets


WVJC’s nine-month dental assisting training consists of a combination of front office management, chairside care, and dental technologies and includes:

  • Exposing and developing radiographs
  • Sterilizing dental instruments and equipment
  • Educating on proper oral hygiene
  • Assisting dentists during dental procedures
  • Managing patient records
  • Mixing dental cement and preparing teeth
  • Taking dental impressions and performing laboratory duties
  • Scheduling procedures

WVJC’s nine-month Dental Assisting program is career-focused. Students invest their time and work developing skills for specific job categories. Externships and certifications augment the skill-based learning delivered in the classroom.

Externships are placements in dental work environments where students apply their newfound abilities and chairside manners to real-world situations and patients.

Certifications show employers that potential employees understand the language and possess the common skill sets to perform within the workflow of their operations.
