Meet Medical Assisting Graduate
Jacalyn Maine
Before enrolling at WVJC Online, Jacalyn Maine had previously attended another college but did not complete her studies there. Balancing her classes with a demanding work schedule proved too difficult, leading her to put her education on hold.
Jacalyn worked as a secretary at a body shop for four years before deciding to return to school. Although she found stability in her job, she yearned for a more fulfilling career. She chose to attend West Virginia Junior College primarily because of the convenience of online classes, which would allow her to balance her studies with her other responsibilities. Additionally, she chose a program in the medical field, recognizing it as a thriving industry with ample career opportunities.
Jacalyn’s experience in the Clinical Medical Assistant program was largely positive. She appreciated the easy access to teachers, who provided quick responses to her questions and concerns. This accessibility, combined with the flexibility of online courses, enabled her to manage her studies alongside her other commitments.
When asked about her favorite teacher or class at WVJC, Jacalyn highlighted the Career Prep class with Sam Dobson, which she took at the end of her program. She found this class particularly beneficial as it helped her prepare for future job interviews and provided guidance in her field of study, ultimately preparing her for a career as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant* (CCMA).
With her graduation behind her, Jacalyn plans to continue her education. She is currently working on obtaining her Phlebotomy certification and is actively seeking employment as either a Medical Assistant or a Phlebotomist. Her long-term goal, however, is to become a travel nurse. In five years, she envisions herself enjoying a life of financial freedom, traveling, and providing a better life for her two sons, all thanks to the education she received at West Virginia Junior College.
Jacalyn is a strong advocate for WVJC and would definitely recommend it to her friends and family. She knows many working mothers who feel stuck in dead-end jobs and believes they could greatly benefit from the opportunities provided by WVJC. She sees the college as an excellent option for those looking to start a new career, especially for busy individuals who need the flexibility of online courses.
One of Jacalyn’s favorite memories from her time at WVJC was learning how to give injections and take blood samples. Initially, she never thought she would enjoy such tasks, but once she started, she found them to be incredibly rewarding. Helping patients this way gave her a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that not everyone can perform these tasks. The feeling of being needed and making a difference in people’s lives was a significant highlight of her educational journey.
Reflecting on her experience, Jacalyn emphasizes that it is never too late to pursue something new. She always knew she loved taking care of people and found it rewarding. Starting her education at WVJC made her realize she could turn this passion into a career, all while earning a living doing something she loves. At 42 years old, she never imagined she would go back to college, achieve an associate degree, and earn her CCMA certification.* Her journey serves as an inspiration to others, showing that it is possible to achieve one’s dreams regardless of age.
Jacalyn highly recommends the online programs offered by WVJC Online. Her story is a testament to the idea that anyone can embark on a new path and succeed in their chosen field with determination and the right support.
