What Do Nurses Do?

Nurses are vital members of a healthcare team. They provide comprehensive patient care, monitor vitals, administer medication, assist with procedures, provide comfort, educate patients and their families, and more. In WVJC’s online/hybrid Nursing program, students will take courses that cover a range of topics including pediatrics, obstetrics, gerontology, community care, medical-surgical, critical care, and nursing fundamentals. Students will be prepared to handle many nursing roles and many medical situations.

How Long is Nursing School?

Classes will take place in six-week increments, and students should expect to complete their degree in just 18 months! This unique model for nursing education provides students with some flexibility to balance their studies with work and family responsibilities. Students in the program will attend virtual classes and complete coursework online. Clinical experiences and laboratory training will happen at regional healthcare facilities during evenings and weekends. This means students typically have less difficulty fitting continuing their education into their already busy schedule.

WVJC School of Nursing has partnered with regional hospitals so that our student nurses can attend their lab and clinical experiences on evenings and weekends. WVJC has partnered with Raleigh General Hospital, Charleston Area Medical Center, Roane General Hospital, Greenbrier Valley Medical CenterLogan Regional Medical Center, WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, Mon Health Medical Center, WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center, Davis Medical Center, WVU Medicine’s Wheeling Hospital, and WVU Medicine’s Reynolds Memorial Hospital. These valuable partnerships have helped address nursing shortages in West Virginia.

A fully functioning Mobile Nursing Lab (MNL) is also available for students. The MNLs enhance the program’s laboratory experiences with high-fidelity simulators. The Mobile Nursing Lab is an RV configured with two fully functioning simulated hospital rooms. Each MNL is equipped with two high-tech, computerized manikins that create lifelike situations. The manikins are prepared for customized simulations involving adult emergency, pediatric, and obstetric care.

There are three MNLs. They go by the names Charlene, Florence, and Mary Virginia. “The goal of the Mobile Nursing Lab is to bring these skill checks and simulations out to our online nursing college students,” said Brian Harris, WVJC’s Director of Simulation Education in Nursing. “We can do a variety of scenarios in them, pretty much anything you could see in a hospital setting.” WVJC brings these hands-on experiences directly to the students in their communities!
