Meet Cassidy and Alexandra!
At West Virginia Junior College (WVJC), our Practical Nursing (PN) students come from diverse backgrounds. Still, they share a common thread—an unwavering dedication to caring for others and pursuing their dreams. We recently interviewed two PN students, Cassidy Harper from Bridgeport and Alexandra Ryder from Martinsburg.
Continue reading this blog to learn more about why they chose WVJC, what they’ve enjoyed most about their journey, and where they hope to go next.
Why Did You Choose WVJC?
Cassidy Harper, a student at our Bridgeport campus, knew WVJC was the right fit due to its flexibility and reputation. “A coworker who recently graduated from WVJC highly recommended the nursing program,” she shared. “After starting and stopping two other nursing programs over the past 25 years due to family commitments, I finally found the right path here.”
Alexandra Ryder, studying in Martinsburg, echoed the importance of some flexibility and personal attention. “The hybrid program gave me the ability to manage my schedule, and the smaller class sizes made it easier to connect with instructors who truly know and support me,” she said. “Plus, WVJC’s close ties to local healthcare facilities help with job placement after graduation.”
Why Did You Choose WVJC’s Practical Nursing Program?
Both students found that WVJC’s Practical Nursing program aligned perfectly with their personal and professional goals.
For Cassidy, the program offered a long-awaited opportunity: “I’ve been in Emergency Medicine for 26 years—as a paramedic, ER Trauma Tech, and now as a Trauma Data Analyst. This program allows me to finally achieve my dream of becoming a (practical) nurse in just 12 months.”
Alexandra, a single mom, needed something that fit her lifestyle. “The hybrid and accelerated format was ideal. It gave me the chance to pursue nursing without putting my life on hold.”
What Have You Enjoyed Most About the Program?
The experiences of both students highlight the incredible sense of community and support that WVJC fosters.
“I love the camaraderie in my cohort,” said Cassidy. “There are just eight of us, and we’ve become like family. The instructors are nothing short of AMAZING—so professional, knowledgeable, and supportive. I would be honored to work alongside them someday.”
Alexandra emphasized the same heartfelt appreciation: “My clinical and lab instructors have made learning enjoyable and exciting. They’ve created a safe space where we feel comfortable asking questions and taking the time to build our confidence.”
What Are Your Plans for the Future?
The future looks bright for both of these compassionate, driven students.
Alexandra aspires to work in hospice or palliative care. “I want to be a steady, caring presence for patients and their families during life’s most challenging moments,” she shared. “It’s about compassion, emotional strength, and making a real difference.”
Cassidy is open to exploring new specialties after a long career in Emergency Medicine. “I’m interested in the Operating Room, Pediatrics, Home Health, or even Pediatric Rehabilitation. I’d also love to teach future students, just like my instructors have inspired me.”
