As the demand for skilled healthcare professionals in West Virginia continues to rise, educational institutions are faced with the challenge of providing practical experience to their students. In response, both colleges and employers are seeking innovative ways to bridge the workforce gap. This is where the unique partnership between WVJC Bridgeport and the United Hospital Center comes in, offering an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a real healthcare setting.
The partnership, initiated with WVJC’s 2020 cohort of nursing students, is a testament to the commitment of both institutions to the development of the healthcare workforce. United Hospital Center (UHC) provides on-site clinical training to future nurses led by a nursing employee at the hospital. In return, WVJC offers a scholarship* for students enrolled in the Nursing program. This unique opportunity not only provides financial support but also paces the way for a promising career in healthcare, with a work commitment at the facility upon graduation and passing the required nursing boards^.
Through this mutually beneficial partnership, WVJC has direct access to adjunct instructors who are employed at UHC and have experience working in the hospital system. Students can become fully immersed in the hospital culture at UHC. In addition, the hospital receives work commitments from qualified nurses who are already familiar with its inner workings.
Additionally, United Hospital Center is also a partnered location for WVU Medicine’s Aspiring Nurse Program. Select WVJC Bridgeport nursing students are eligible for the program, which offers financial support to help with life expenses for nursing students in exchange for a work commitment at UHC upon graduation. The program also provides students with a network of nursing professionals employed at WVU Medicine to guide the next generation of nurses through their studies.
United Hospital Center also offers opportunities for students in several other WVJC programs, including nursing, practical nursing, medical assisting, medical office, and healthcare administration. Students may complete clinical rotations or fulfill externship requirements at the facility. Gaining real-world experience in a local hospital is particularly beneficial for students, as it allows them to become accustomed to hospital culture and allows students to learn alongside industry professionals.
UHC strives to provide excellent patient care and fulfill its mission of enhancing the health of the citizens of North-Central West Virginia. As a trusted partner, WVJC is proud to work closely with a facility that provides upstanding healthcare and training to those in the community.
The WVJC academic process allows students to learn through classroom instruction, hands-on training, externships, and more. The variety of educational experiences allows students to complete their education with the skills and knowledge necessary to begin a healthcare career.
